How I'm Refining My Creative Process

Business

For the past 4 months, I’ve had an imbalance in my business that I’m beginning to see the compounded effects of.

Despite remaining consistent with my goal of 1 video per week, I’ve over-indexed on creating which has left me with close to no time each week spent intentionally consuming.

What I mean by this is deliberately consuming content to take inspiration from it.

While you’re surely familiar with the idea of over-consuming, under-consuming is just as if not more harmful as a creator.

Watching videos from other YouTubers in my niche is important to see what types of videos are performing well, and how I can put my own spin on the format to appeal to my audience.

In addition to that, some videos may have been created within an entirely different niche, yet can still be modeled uniquely.

By not taking in this inspiration, I’m limiting the rate at which I can improve.

A few days ago I realized I had no idea what my next video was going to be about.

I vaguely know what I’ll be working on within the next 2-3 weeks, but how I’ve been operating for these last 4 months (and really the entire time I’ve been making content) is starting each video entirely from scratch.

Moving forward, these are the refinements I’ll be making to my process:

  • have the following 4 uploads planned and put in my Notion backlog

  • list out what products I need to purchase

  • take down notes from videos with similar concepts

Doing just these few things will make my entire process go much smoother.

I will know what work I have to do for the next month, and I can have much more time to prepare what I’ll be talking about in each video.

This leads me to the pivot I’m making in 2024 — I’m taking inspiration from Andres Vidoza’s Day in the Life, vlog-style content, and leaning into lifestyle a lot more.

I’ve been hiding behind my voiceovers and not showing much of myself or my personality.

I hypothesize that by showing my face more often in b-roll and including more a-roll (talking to camera) segments, the videos will resonate more.

Things I’ve been working on

I made an updated everyday carry video for the new year. A few things have changed, mainly to match the all-black aesthetic I’ve been adopting.

I made my YouTube Notion template available as a digital product. I think this makes a ton of sense as something to have in the background.

See you all next week.
